Rare Early French Candy Container in the Shape of a Doll's Armchair

During the first half of the 19th century, a lot of luxury Candy Boxes were proposed by the Parisian candy stores. Some of them were manufactured in the shape of doll furniture. This armchair is one of these Candy boxes.

This large scale dollhouse armchair is decorated with luxury gilt paper and its original red cotton upholstery. It is a typical piece of the French Restauration style. The Restauration period began in 1815.After Napoleon 1st defeat at Waterloo, the coalition of European powers restored the monarchy. This period ended in 1830. Characteristics of chairs during this period were : light wood, saber design legs, rectangular back, curved arms, and gilt decoration.

Note the very large gilt paper on the front of the armchair, to give volume to the candy box.

The armchair is 6 3/4"(17 cm) high. It is stenciled 3149 2b.

Excellent condition.
